Professional School counselors provide and carry out a
comprehensive and developmental guidance and counseling program which focuses
on the uniqueness of ALL students in three areas of development: academic,
career and personal/social. These areas
or domains are in alignment with the American School Counselor Association
(ASCA) national standards. Developmental
Guidance can be sometimes known as classroom guidance. This services a classroom as a whole and the
counselor interacts with a larger group to provide service to students.
STRATFORDS GRADE 6 Developmental Guidance Curriculum:
1. Meet your counselor- lesson provided for grade 6 students to get to know their School Counselor and understand counselor's role.
2. Introduction to SSP (student success plan)- Career Key Assessment- students receive usernames and passwords and begin exploring the Naviance website. They also complete an online career assessment.
3.Study Skills and Organization- students learn hints on how to be successful in school by staying
organized. These skills will help students as they progress through grade 6 but are essential in their transition to Middle School.
4. S.M.A.R.T. Goals- students set goals for themselves. I ask that each student to set two short term and one long term goal using the S.M.A.R.T. goal acronym. Students upload goals into the computer (career cruising) and revisit them in Middle School.
5. Transition- Students are given a transition lesson to help ease anxiety of leaving Elementary school
and entering Middle School. Information is provided to students about everyday life at the Middle School.
