NAVIANCE:
Naviance is a website Stratford School District is using to help your children develop an individualized electronic portfolio. Students will be learning how to log into the website as well as learning how to explore their individual portfolio beginning in grade 6. This website will be accessible to students from sixth grade through grade twelve. The capabilities of the website are tremendous. You can explore information about various colleges in the nation such as: academic information, expenses and financial aid, enrollment, student life, athletics and majors offered. In later grades students will build resumes, export college applications and apply for scholarships directly through the Naviance website.
Naviance will be introduced to students this year. Each student will be assigned tasks in the areas of career development and goal setting to complete throughout the school year. These tasks will be assigned by the students School Counselor and students will be allowed to monitor their progress in their portfolios. In grade 6 students will begin getting exposure to the idea of college and some of the terminology associated with the process, for example GPA or Financial Aid. If a student is interested in technical careers (electrician, hairdresser) we also discuss the opportunities available in the technical world. For 6th graders the students will par-take in a career assessment. Each student is asked a series of questions about their likes and dislikes. The assessment will than generate a list of different career possibilities based upon their answers. No two students will have the same list. Their results are individualized based upon their specified interests. Students will then be asked to choose their top three career choices and save them to their Naviance portfolios. They are given the opportunity to learn in more detail about their chosen careers.
The sixth grade students will also use Naviance to log goals for themselves. Students learn how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals with their Counselor and log their goals into their individualized plan. Students will go back into their portfolios with their upcoming counselors in Middle School so they can track their progress. Students will be using this program for years to come and will eventually become vital part in planning for their post-secondary experiences. Each grade level the tasks required in Naviance varies and adjusts to an age appropriate level. Students are able to log into the site on any computer, they do not need to be in school to access their portfolio. Students may log in by using the access codes that will be given to them by their School Counselor.
