Dear Parent/Guardian,
My name is Amanda Cotela and I am a School Counselor in the district servicing grade 6 students at Johnson House, Nichols, Chapel and Lordship schools. I just wanted to take a brief moment to introduce myself to you as I will be working with your children throughout the school year. I am looking forward to having a wonderful year with your children and helping them continue to be successful as they approach middle school next year.
My role as a School Counselor differs slightly from that of a typical counselor in that I will be servicing several schools in the district. I was hired primarily to help launch a program called Student Success Planning which all of your children will be introduced to as the year progresses. Success Planning is a state initiative that was created to help launch post-secondary achievement. This initiative’s focus is to promote a population of students who are college and/or career ready upon graduation in grade 12. Ideally, this program was created to help children be as successful as possible as they advance on through secondary education. This will also start the process of having students feel eager and, more importantly, ready for their future. This process is not one that can wait until students are in secondary school to begin. I will work with students this year to begin a conversation about careers and the importance of education on their futures. These conversations will be continued with students and reinforced by their School Counselors as they progress on in the district. In order to begin this process I will be going into the classroom and giving lessons on various topics, I will be holding some groups and working with your children individually throughout the school year. Students will learn how to use an online program this year called Naviance. This online program will stay with students as they advance into the middle and high schools in the district. Naviance aids in developing an individualized plan for each child that is electronic and
accessible at home. Please be looking out for more information regarding Naviance that will be sent home with your children in the first few months of school. To learn more about Stratford’s Elementary Guidance Program visit the grade 6 counseling web page at www.counselorcotela.weebly.com.
I am here to help students be successful. I look forward to working with your children and getting to know them throughout the school year. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via email or by phone (see schedule on back). I am always available to help your children. I am looking forward to a wonderful year.
Sincerely,
Amanda Cotela
